White Hulled Sesame Seeds

In the U.S., white hulled sesame seeds often adorn the tops of breads, hamburger buns, bagels, and many baked goods. In addition to adding an aesthetic appeal, they also impart a delightful and soft nutty flavor.

White hulled sesame seeds are also great in cereals, spreads, hummus, granola, candy, and crackers and also sprinkled onto salads, fish dishes and even soups!

White hulled sesame seeds are also delicious when toasted; the process really enhances their flavor.

Cuisines from Japan (sushi), China (dim sum), and many Indian, Cuban, Korean, and Middle Eastern dishes (tahini and halvah) often rely on white hulled sesame seeds (and also other varieties) for their unique flavors and textures, not to mention the wonderful nutritional benefits.

And speaking of nutritional benefits, this tiny seed is packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy oils.

White hulled sesame seeds are known to be high in important minerals like iron, magnesium, manganese, copper, phosphorus, and calcium.

In addition, they contain thiamine (vitamin B1) and tocopherol (vitamin E) and are a source of protein.

As you can see, white hulled sesame seeds are a wonderful addition to so many types of foods.

Sesame Seed Plants and Harvesting

Sesame seed crops are harvested between September and April.

The plants (typically between two and four feet tall) produce lovely white to purplish-pink flowers, which mature into pods containing these wonderful edible seeds.

When the pod is ready, it bursts open and the seeds can get scattered, so sesame seed pods are typically harvested manually before they're even ripe.

The seeds come in a variety of colors, from black, brown and red to yellow and white.

What is Hulling and Why is it Done?

Sesame seeds have a thin shell (or husk) which is usually removed. This process, known as hulling, improves the digestibility of sesame seeds.

Hulled white sesame seeds are typically softer than unhulled white sesame seeds, and they're usually tastier, too.

These are the seeds we carry here at Cooperative Purchasers.
